Abstract

INTRODUCTION:

Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)or stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in India. Disability in the form of hemiplegia, paraplegia, or quadriplegia with or without facial palsy is prevalent in most patients post an episode of stroke. In this case report, the effect of comprehensive Ayurvedic therapy in managing hemiplegia is being reported.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

A 58-year-old hypertensive, diabetic woman with a computed tomography (CT) report indicative of right Ganglio-capsular acute hemorrhage with intraventricular extension came with complaints of weakness in the left half of the body, a tendency to fall towards the left side with a mild deviation of angle of the mouth towards right side since January 24, 2022; and was admitted to the Department of Panchakarma, Sri Sri College of Ayurvedic Science and Research Hospital, Sri Sri University, Cuttack, Odisha. The patient was managed with oral interventions indicated for Vatavyadhi Chikitsa and Panchakarma procedures like different types of Swedana (fomentation), Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oil), and Nitya Virechana (therapeutic purgation).

RESULT AND CONCLUSION:

The power of the left hand increased from 0 to 2, and that of the left leg increased from 0 to 3 after Panchakarma therapy and oral interventions that lasted 1 and 2 months, respectively. The patient could sit for 30 min and walk a few steps with support from a completely bedridden state. A comprehensive Ayurvedic therapeutic intervention provided good recovery for residual hemiplegia and other neurological complaints developed post-stroke.
