7. Prototyping the Narrative Skeleton
Joris ZilliukasJames Joyce’s drafts of Ulysses provide a wealth of material for genetic analysis. The ‘proto-draft’ manuscript of Ulysses’ penultimate episode, ‘Ithaca’, affords a one-of-a-kind look into how Joyce made material into narrative, from fabula, to the utilization of techniques such as disnarration and ‘the unnarrated’ (Prince, 1988). The chapter uses a genetic narratological treatment to portray a writer projecting their writing into the future, casting it aside, and shaping style and content.
