5. Syntax of nouns

Wiktor Gębski

This chapter examines various phenomena observed in the syntax of nouns in Jewish Gabes, namely, the system of definiteness, genitive constructions, and grammatical concord. Given the absence of a comparative description of North African Arabic syntax, the selection of topics is informed by Kristen Brustad's (2000) work on the syntax of spoken Arabic, albeit with several modifications. A significant departure lies in the methodology employed in this chapter, specifically the adoption of a typological and historical perspective in approaching the syntax of Jewish Gabes. The emphasis on comparative analysis is particularly crucial in this chapter, as insights from neighbouring dialects can offer valuable information for understanding the evolution of syntax in Jewish Gabes.
