4. Caribbean Region

Fabio Buitrago, Peltier Barahona

Chapter 4 starts by detailing the extension of the country´s territory in the Caribbean Sea, as defined by the International Court. It then continues to explain the marine ecosystems present in Nicaragua´s Caribbean Sea, as well as the more common species of biodiversity. It then continues to describe the marine protected areas that have been formally established, and the economic importance of conserving the marine ecosystems as service providers, economic basis and how the changes on climate are affecting this economic potential. The chapter closes with an explanation of how the Lionfish invasion started, and with an interesting story of the French pirate L'Olonais, whose last ship lies down in Nicaraguan waters close to Corn Island.
