3D Printed Molecular Models for Organic Chemistry Education

Physical molecular models are important and time-honored tools that facilitate the understanding of molecular structure and aid the development of visuospatial skills and representational literacy needed for success in organic chemistry courses and beyond. The growth and maturation of accessible, consumer-grade 3D printers have empowered chemistry researchers and instructors to design and fabricate an array of affordable and custom molecular models for classroom and student use. This chapter describes the general process for 3D printing structure models of organic molecules from atomic xyz coordinates and highlights key examples and publications which demonstrate the breadth of open and closed molecular models for instructors new to 3D printing or those seeking inspiration.
