Hewitson is semi-retired (having sold the Preston Chronicle in 1890); he moves from Bilsborrow to Forton, a small village south of Lancaster. The diaries detail his family and domestic life, buying and selling horses and cattle, church attendance, his reading and church attendance, preparations for a Lancaster Liberal-Unionist newspaper (the Lancaster Standard , launched in 1893), and many conversations with mill owners, shopkeepers, local councillors, landowners and characters.
