The OLD MAN PALM ( Coccothrinax crinita (R.D. Hoyt) Becc. subsp. crinita ) is among the most popular Cuban species used in South Florida and the Caribbean for gardening and landscaping, and it has been a flagship species for plant conservation awareness and outreach in Cuba. Its biogeography, conservation status, systematics, and horticultural requirements are reviewed. Watercolour and ink illustrations are presented. Scanning electron microscopy work was performed on the flowers and pollen of C. crinita subsp. crinita . An overview on the known biology of the infraspecific taxon of this palm ( C. crinita subsp. brevicrinis Borhidi & Muñiz) is also presented.
