清代志怪小说夜间故事中的道士形象研究(A Study of the Image of Taoist Priests in Nighttime Stories from Qing Dynasty Supernatural Fiction)

谭慧敏 Huimin Tan
Abstract: Building upon the traditions of supernatural fiction from previous dynasties, Qing Dynasty supernatural fiction combines the narration of strange tales, aesthetic appeal, and concern for reality. As a special time and space where the realms of the living and the dead intersect and humans and spirits communicate, the night serves as a crucial setting in Qing Dynasty supernatural fiction and provides unique conditions for the portrayal of Taoist figures. Drawing upon the eerie and mysterious atmosphere of the night, Qing Dynasty literati created diverse portrayals of Taoists, including those engaged in religious exorcism, ethical discipline, and the misdeeds of pseudo-Taoists. This study examines the portrayal of Taoist priests in nighttime tales within Qing Dynasty supernatural fiction. By analyzing the factors behind their emergence from the perspectives of social religion, literary tradition, and literati psychology, it aims to reveal the religious, ethical, socio-psychological, and aesthetic implications these characters embody.
