Åke Senning—ein Pionier der Herzchirurgie

In July 21 st 2001 Åke Senning, a pioneer of cardiac surgery deceased just before the age of 85 in Zurich. Senning contributed wastly to the development of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in Zurich, Europe and worldwide. He developed the heart-lung machine, implanted the first pacemaker, invented novel operative approaches such as the "Senning procedure" for the correction of the transposition of the great vessels, initiated transplantation surgery in Switzerland and also contributed to general surgery. A man with many talents Senning was able to combine knowledge and technical know-how to the benefit of patients and surgery as a discipline.
