Abstract

Aims

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is 3rd prevalent & 2nd lethal malignancy in UK. Emergency CRC presents < 30% cases (NBOCA 2022) & associated with high post-operative morbidity & mortality. Aim of study is to assess post-operative complications in emergency CRC resections.

Methods

A cohort study carried out from Jan'08 to Feb'23, post-operative surgical outcomes were evaluated in emergency CRC resections. Elective CRC resections recruited as controls.

Results

Conclusion

Emergency CRC resections had higher ASA 3. There was a greater early post operative mortality rate, but no difference in post operative complications & anastomotic leakage. However, emergency CRC resections was associated with prolonged hospital stay (p < 0.001) & poorer survival rates (Logrank p <0.0001) (worse in perforated cancers). Emergency CRC presentations remain a challenge, accounting for 20% of all CRC’s for the last decade. Therefore, our study supports prompt diagnosis and early intervention of emergency CRC mitigate the poor survival.
