Magnetic behavior of helicoidal structure in europium

A. G. Blinov, L. A. Boyarskii, V. Ya. Dikovskii

The magnetization of polycrystalline europium has been measured by the ballistic method at temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 300°K in magnetic fields of up to 30 kOe. The specimen was cooled in longitudinal and transverse fields (relative to the measuring field) to determine the anisotropy of the magnetization of the helicoidally ordered structure. The anisotropy is found to be small (no greater than 10%), which may possibly be due to a large additive, almost isotropic contribution to the magnetization of europium. Some models are proposed for explaining the nature of this contribution.
