Abstract
Aims
To evaluate the analgesic prescription for inpatients with rib fractures
Methods
Patients (18 years or over) who were admitted with rib fractures and underwent imaging between August 2021 and September 2022 were identified from a prospectively maintained radiology database. Those discharged or transferred to a tertiary centre were excluded. Analgesic prescription, pain scores and referral to specialist services were retrieved from a prospectively maintained electronic patient record system (Meditech, Version 6, USA).
Results
Type of analgesia Percentage of patients receiving prescription (%) Paracetamol 100% NSAIDS 29% Weak opioid (codeine/ tramadol) 54% Strong opioid 100% Patient controlled analgesia 17% Thoracic epidural 4% Regional anaesthesia blocks 0%
Conclusions
The current practice of multimodal analgesic prescription for inpatients with rib fractures needs improvement.
