A short review on phenolic foams produced in the USSR is presented, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of these materials for pipe insulation. The main requirements for heat insulation materials for channelless heat lines are formulated. The data on model test experiments under conditions imitating the service of heat insulated pipes are discussed. A comparison of phenolic foams and foamed concrete insulations is presented. On the basis of above mentioned data the aim to create a new type of phenol-resin-based foam is presented.
