Electric field distribution in aluminum in strong magnetic fields

V. I. Gostishchev, A. A. Drozd, S. E. Dem’yanov

An anomalous electric field distribution was found in high purity aluminum under strong magnetic fields, produced by transverse displacement of current lines due to longitudinal inhomogeneity in H. The admissable inhomogeneity with use of the four-electrode method is determined by the effective magnetic field, with increase in which the requirement for field uniformity becomes more stringent. In fields with nonzero homogeneity a normal E distribution is found only at the middle of a homogeneous field region along the lateral surfaces of the specimen. The field dependence of magnetoresistance measured in these regions corresponds to theoretical predictions and agrees with results obtained by the electrodeless method.
