A transition-metal-free catalytic reduction of benzylic alcohols and alkenes and N-formylation of nitroarenes mediated by iodide ions and formic acid

A novel transition-metal-free catalytic system utilizing sodium iodide as a catalyst, in combination with formic acid, has been developed for the selective reduction of hydroxyl groups and the reductive N-formylation of nitroarenes.
